Event Description

The world is in the midst of a seismic shift in the way we generate energy and grow economic prosperity. Since the first industrial revolution we’ve been burning carbon to run our lives, but climate change and dwindling supplies of oil are now forging a new clean industrial revolution which will end our reliance on carbon for good.

So where does Australia’s economic future lie in this rapidly changing world?

In this compelling book, climate scientist and economist Ben McNeil demonstrates the immense economic opportunities which will open up if Australia leads the new clean industrial revolution. He shows how investing, commercialising and exporting the new fuels, materials and technologies for the twenty-first century will boost economic prosperity as well as environmental sustainability.

In a world craving clean energy, nations and businesses who are clever and courageous enough to embrace the change will thrive.

Ben McNeil is a senior research fellow at the Climate Change Research Centre at the University of nsw. He has a Masters of Economics in addition to his scientific training, and is on the executive of the prestigious Federation of Australasian Scientific and Technological Societies (fasts) and speaks regularly at corporate and scientific events and to media.

Pre-paid bookings essential. Adults $8.80, pensioners and students $6.60 (passes must be shown). Enquiries phone 9978 4091.

Outpost - Adam Baker

On the front cover of this book is the question - 'When the end of the world comes...do you want to be the first to go? or the last to survive?' My answer is that if this is the kind of book you will have to read...then I want to be the first to go. Outpost promised much (in the blurb) but delivered little. The action limped along (although I did keep reading it just to see if anything would happen) but nothing much did. There were a lots of questions with no answers e.g. how did the girl who…See More

Red Dress Walking by S.A. Jones

A thoughtful and engaging novel about friendships between women, and men and women, intertwined with a love story, and the conflict created by a red dress.  It also looks at the place of literature in people's lives.  I recommend reading the prologue at the end, rather than the beginning, of the story.  See More

The Hundred- Foot Journey by Richard C. Morais

I thoroughly enjoyed this novel. It is a great 'foodie' novel and being mostly set in France it combined my love of food and anything to do with France as well.It is the story of the Hassan Haji and his family who are forced to leave Mumbai after the tragic death of Hassan's mother. The family finally ends up in France and…See More

A Prisoner of Birth by Jeffrey Archer

This book had me enthralled from start to finish.  I have read all of Archer's books and judge this one to be his best.  Having spent time in prison himself, his description of being incarcerated rings true, and the characters in his book are very real.See More

The most memorable book I read in 2011.  Beautiful descriptions and interesting story of life during the American Civil War.
