The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie society Is a novel about a young English author looking for a subject for her new book who falls into a letter writing friendship with a reading group on the Channel island of Guernsey. Intrigued by the letter-writing characters and their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and enters a community emerging from the shadow of German occupation during the Second World War. It’s a kind of quaint but very smart novel that has become enormously popular with book groups. An easy but enjoyable read.

i was given this book for Christmas due to our family history links with Guernsey, which i visited with my father on several occasions. I pictured the terrain and personalities as I had met on my visits.

I found the book quite compelling, peeling the layers of the onion so to speak in relation to the revelations of the characters, and found a hankie a necessity... i loved the book.

I enjoyed this book too. It was interesting on a couple of levels - one as a feel good story and two because I didn't realise that the Channel Islands were occupied by the Germans in WW2
