The Rules of Civility - Amor Towles

I enjoyed this book, it was an interesting story and well written enough to keep me reading till the end. Although a little way in, I started wondering about the author, is Amor Towles male or female? I found it hard to believe that the story was narrated by a woman or at least no woman that I've ever met thinks the same way that Kate Kontent does - compartmentalising emotions and experiences so "manfully". It wasn't until I did a bit of research and discovered Amor Towles to be a man, that…See More

Jane B replied to Kim Allen Scott's discussion 'Under the Banner of Heaven / by Jon Krakauer'
I too have read Krakauer's Under the Banner of Heaven and thought it was so interesting an expose on the Morman Church(which is quite a small group in Australia) that I put it on the reading list for my book group as I thought there was lots to…

Under the Banner of Heaven / by Jon Krakauer

In one sense, the Mormon Church hasn’t done very well in the arena of English speaking public opinion.  Critics of the faith, armed with a documented historical record that surpasses any other major world religion, can find ample evidence to cast doubt upon the legitimacy of the Mormon’s belief system and have never failed to do so.  This is a consequence of a religion founded less than two hundred years ago, in an age where functioning courts, newspapers, and literate individuals could and did…See More

Rob Roy / by Sir Walter Scott

I wonder how an Australian would present an American southern accent in printed dialect?  Ah imagine it’d look sumthin lahk this, which requires quite a leap on the part of the reader to sound out the characters in his mind while scanning the words on a page.  It would take a considerably interesting plot to sustain your interest during several pages of this sort of mangled English, and few writers are capable of keeping their readers from putting down the volume in despair.I bring up the…See More

An electric blue sheep of the breed "Android's Dream". However, someone has…See More

Outpost - Adam Baker

On the front cover of this book is the question - 'When the end of the world comes...do you want to be the first to go? or the last to survive?' My answer is that if this is the kind of book you will have to read...then I want to be the first to go. Outpost promised much (in the blurb) but delivered little. The action limped along (although I did keep reading it just to see if anything would happen) but nothing much did. There were a lots of questions with no answers e.g. how did the girl who…See More
